Great Table Wine - Low Price - Check It Out

Mastroleo Salice Salentino Riserva 2004 (LCBO # 121632 $15.95) 88 pts

Sometimes you buy a wine because it is from a region you want to taste again. That was the case with this red wine Mastroleo Salice Salentino Riserva 2004. Its roots are Southern Italian, to be more specific the Puglia region.

Southern Italian wines are hot right now, so I had to jump on the bandwagon and try one. Mastroleo Salice Salentino Riserva 2004 is a mix of two local grapes, 80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera aged for 9 months in oak barrels.

The Review

My rating:88 points out of 100

I opened this bottle with dinner and decided to taste it throughout the evening. Upon opening this wine there was very little nose. The colour was dark but the body was on the lighter side. It had a balanced fruit taste with hints of wild currants and a touch of chocolate. After being open for an hour, the oak flavors became apparent and the wine improved. After 2 hours being open, more of the chocolate taste came through with a bit more nose. As time went on, the wine lost a lot of its complexity.

This was a great everyday drinking table wine that is well matched with lighter foods. Mastroleo Salice Salentino Riserva 2004 is a good value wine that should be drank right now and finished on the same night.

Music pairing coming soon… Stay tuned...
